Why Choose Maidenhead Painters

Strip-Out Assessment

We assess what the strip-out reveals before any primer goes on, including damp lime plaster behind removed suites.

Moisture-Tolerant Systems

Bathroom walls behind tiles need moisture-tolerant primer. We do not apply standard emulsion in steam-exposed areas.

Trade Coordination

We sequence around your plumber, tiler, and electrician. Decoration runs after second-fix on agreed timelines.

SL6 Coverage

1930s detached in Furze Platt and Pinkneys Green, and Crossrail-era townhouses in central Maidenhead.

Decoration After Strip-Out

A full bathroom renovation strips the existing suite, tiles, and often the wall surface behind tiles and board. What the strip-out reveals determines the decoration scope.

In 1930s detached properties, removing the old suite exposes original lime plaster commonly damp from decades of bathroom moisture. It needs to dry out fully before any consolidation primer is applied. For the broader home renovation context, see our home renovation page.

Moisture-Tolerant Primer on Stripped Walls

Bathroom walls have a different moisture environment from any other room. Steam penetrates plaster over time, and the areas around plumbing penetrations are consistently wetter than exposed wall areas.

After strip-out, we prime every exposed wall surface with a moisture-tolerant primer before any finish coat or new tile adhesive. Standard emulsion primers are not appropriate in a bathroom renovation context.

Decoration After Second-Fix Tiling

Once tiling is complete, the decoration scope moves to the areas above tile height and the ceiling, plus any surfaces adjacent to the new suite that need finish coats before the bathroom is in use.

Where period-property lime plaster is present on untiled wall areas, we use breathable products throughout. For the full period-property approach, see our period property painting page.

Tanking-Junction Decoration

Where a wet-room or shower enclosure uses a tanking system, the decoration at the tanking boundary requires specific attention. The junction between the tanked area and the decorated area above needs a correctly specified finish that does not absorb moisture at the boundary. We assess and finish this junction as part of the renovation decoration scope.

Here’s How It Works

1. Site visit and assessment

We visit the property after strip-out where possible, or at the point of quoting if strip-out is not yet complete. We identify what is behind the existing surface, note damp areas or loose plaster, and advise on the drying period before decoration can begin.

2. Drying period and consolidation

Damp lime plaster must dry out before any work begins. We advise on the minimum drying period at the site visit, based on the property, the severity of the moisture, and the time of year.

3. Moisture-tolerant primer application

Once surfaces are dry and stable, we apply moisture-tolerant primer across all stripped wall surfaces. Each surface type receives the appropriate primer.

4. Sequencing with the tiler

Second-fix tiling runs after our primer application. We confirm the handover with your tiler so our primer is dry before tile adhesive is applied.

5. Finish coats after second fix

We return after second-fix tiling and plumbing to apply finish coats on untiled surfaces, above tile height, and on ceilings. Drying time between coats is respected. Bathroom surfaces are not rushed.

6. Final walkthrough

We check every surface with you before closing the job.

Bathroom Renovation Decorating Costs in Maidenhead

Costs vary across Maidenhead’s SL6 stock; the ranges below are illustrative — we quote each project from a site visit. Plumbing, tiling, and sanitaryware are scoped separately by the contractor. Call 01628 965566 for a precise decoration quote.

Strip-Out Reveal

Damp lime plaster or heavily contaminated surfaces take longer to assess, dry, and prepare than a straightforward plasterboard bathroom.

Tanking Configuration

Where a wet-room or shower enclosure requires tanking-junction decoration, this adds to the scope and the preparation time at the boundary.

Return Visit Timing

Where we need to return after second-fix tiling for finish coats, the programme spans multiple visits. This is costed accordingly.
